¶ Nevada requires registered nurses to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years to maintain an active license. CE requirements apply to all renewal periods, including the first renewal after initial licensure.

Nursing in Nevada.

Nevada has approximately 40,000 licensed registered nurses serving a population of 3.2 million. Las Vegas is home to most of the state's healthcare infrastructure, including HCA Healthcare facilities and University Medical Center. Nevada faces persistent nursing shortages, particularly in rural areas outside Clark and Washoe counties.

Nevada requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years for RN license renewal. Nevada mandates bioterrorism awareness training as part of CE requirements. The state accepts CE from providers approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and national accrediting bodies.

Common practice settings

Las Vegas Hospitals

The Las Vegas valley has multiple hospital systems serving residents and the substantial tourist population.

Casino and Resort Health

Large resorts maintain health services, and emergency departments see tourist-related cases regularly.

Rural Nevada

Counties outside Las Vegas and Reno face extreme healthcare access challenges.

Renewal tips

01

Complete 30 contact hours, including bioterrorism awareness training.

02

Use Board-approved or nationally accredited providers.

03

Keep CE certificates for at least 4 years.

04

Consider emergency and trauma CE given Nevada's tourist population.

The Nurse Licensure Compact in Nevada

Nevada is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. This allows Nevada nurses to practice in other compact states and is valuable for nurses who may work in nearby Arizona, Utah, or Idaho.

In context. Nevada requires 30 contact hours every 2 years for RN license renewal. Compared with neighbors, California has similar requirements (30 hours), while Oregon has no general CE requirement. Nevada is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses need a separate license to practice here.
