General CEU questions

01

What is a CEU vs a contact hour?

A contact hour represents 60 minutes of organized learning activity. Technically, 1 CEU equals 10 contact hours according to ANCC standards, but many states and providers use the terms interchangeably.

02

How many CEUs do I need to renew my nursing license?

Requirements vary significantly by state, ranging from 0 to 45+ contact hours per renewal period. Some states also have different requirements for RNs, LPNs, and APRNs.

03

Do CEUs expire?

CEU courses themselves don't expire, but they must be completed within your state's specified timeframe (usually your renewal period). Some mandatory topics may need to be repeated each renewal cycle.

04

Can I earn CEUs online?

Most states accept online continuing education, but some have restrictions. A few states limit the percentage of hours that can be completed online or require certain topics to have live components.

License renewal

05

When do I need to renew my nursing license?

Renewal periods vary by state. Some are annual, others every 2 to 3 years. Your license expiration date is typically based on your birth month or initial licensure date.

06

What happens if I don't complete my CEUs on time?

Practicing with an expired license is illegal and can result in disciplinary action. If you miss your deadline, most states offer a grace period or late renewal option with additional fees.

07

I'm exempt from CEUs for my first renewal. What does this mean?

Many states waive CE requirements for nurses renewing for the first time after initial licensure. This exemption typically only applies to your first renewal cycle.

08

Do I need to submit my certificates when renewing?

Most states use an attestation system where you certify completion and only submit documentation if audited. Some states require proof with renewal. Always keep records for at least 4 to 5 years.

Multi-state licensing

09

What is the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)?

The NLC allows nurses to have one multistate license that permits practice in all participating compact states. If your primary state of residence is a compact state, you may be eligible.

10

I'm a travel nurse. Which state's CEU requirements do I follow?

If you hold a compact/multistate license, you follow your home state's requirements. If you hold individual licenses in multiple states, you must meet each state's requirements separately.

Compare state requirements

11

Can CEUs from one state count in another state?

Generally yes, as long as the provider is accredited by a recognized organization (like ANCC). State-specific mandatory topics may only be accepted from approved providers for that state.

Choosing CE providers

12

How do I know if a CE provider is legitimate?

Look for accreditation from recognized bodies like ANCC, your state board of nursing, or specialty organizations. Legitimate providers will clearly display their accreditation status.

13

Are free CE courses as good as paid ones?

Quality varies for both. Many reputable organizations offer free CEUs. The key is verifying the provider is properly accredited.

14

What information should be on my CE certificate?

A valid certificate should include: your name, course title, provider name and accreditation number, date of completion, and number of contact hours awarded. Keep these certificates indefinitely.

16

Can I track CEUs for multiple state licenses?
